Anyways, things have been busy around here. Brian and Dave are in the heart of filming "According to Satan" (in fact they just released a commercial for it HERE) and you would think that they wouldn't have anytime for anything else but, they just announced that they will be teaming up with artist Andrew Gregory to do a bi-weekly comic strip titled Lab Monkeys which will appear in the Jacksonville magazine EU as well as online at salisburylake.com. Dave will be writing the strips, Andrew will be drawing them, and Brian will be coloring them. Lab Monkeys will premeire the first part of October, so check 'em out! And if that wasn't enough Brian and Dave will also be doing a story for the anthology book Oh, Comics! whci will be premiering in November at the Mid-Ohio Comic Con. Those crazy guys. No wonder they always have dark circles under their eyes. Well, until next month, may the comics be with you. |

Penguins are hot! The other day I was at the Office Depot picking up some White Out for the White House when I passed by the laptops and saw something peculiar. It wasn't strange in that kind of 'Boy! I'm about to lose my lunch!' way or even in that 'I'm glad my kids didn't see that or I'd have some explaining to do' kinda way. It just struck me as queer. And not in the way you're thinking now either. The demo they were using to show off the power of the systems was a modified version of 'Lemmings' where they had replaced the Smurf-like suicidal misfits with penguins. It got me thinking, penguins sure are hot right now! So how did these Oreo tuxedo wearing flightless fowl become so popular? Was it 'March of the Penguins'? Was the Morgan Freeman narrated documentary really that influencial? Or is something else lurking below the waves of the South Pole water that's filling the water bottles in Hollywood? Obviously it is the latter, as this is an According to Satan rant. Borrowing from the likes of Himmler and Michael Moore, Hollywood is tackling the issues that they find important in the most efficient and responsible way possible: through propaganda. There are lots of movies that come out of Hollywood that reflect the politics of the filmmakers. 'The Grapes of Wrath' was about unionization and social programs. 'All the President's Men' was about censorship and the power of the single voter. 'Three Kings' was about our government's motives in military conflicts. But these were all films intended for adults. Nowadays it seems like every movie has some sort of partisan message. Even movies for kids. The remake of 'The Shaggy Dog' is a PETA flick with free Tibet overtones. Disney's 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' was a gay acceptance piece. And likewise, movies about penguins are not about what they seem. There is a deeper subtext, a darker one. Simply put, penguin flicks are about global warming. For evidence, watch the end of 'Happy Feet'. I will spare describing the scene to avoid spoilers for those who rightfully do not expect to see them in my articles. Another example is the general principle of 'Surf's Up', which is about a penguin who finds himself in a different climate then the icey one he was accustomed to naturally and must learn to adapt. The ice is melting... Penguins will either adapt to their new environment or die. And not only that, but following that evidence, we find that other penguin related products may also be selling global warming. Certainly illuminates the lemmings refurbishment. Obviously this doesn't mean that every company that's capitalizing off of the trend are necessarily in on the agenda. I am not saying that a movie shouldn't have a message. Afterall, film is the most powerful medium known to man. But whether you believe in the message being driven into their impressionable minds or not, we have to seriously consider the morals of force feeding our kids a dogma cameoflaged as family friendly entertainment. |
